After a drab first half, Will Grigg’s late strike sealed victory for the Black Cats despite a concerning performance against their League Two opponents.
But who caught the eye ahead of next weekend’s return to competitive action, and who has work to do to convince Phil Parkinson they are deserving of a start?
Scroll down to see how Phil Smith rated the players against Harrogate:
1. Lee Burge
Made a few early stops with Harrogate starting the brightest, but they were saves he would expect to make. Neither goalkeeper was asked too many searching questions during a disappointing final pre-season game. 6 Photo: Frank Reid
2. Jordan Willis
Looked a little off the pace in the early stages. Rarely troubled in what was a fairly tame contest and was replaced by Conor McLaughlin at the break. 5 Photo: Frank Reid
3. Bailey Wright
Fortunate to get away with misjudging one long ball near the half-time interval, but otherwise largely untroubled. Jon Stead was an effective foil for the away side but they struggled to create any real openings. 6 Photo: Frank Reid
4. Tom Flanagan
One or two sloppy moments in possession but also made one terrific block to deny Muldoon just before the break. Wasn’t able to bring possession out as he usually does to try and build attacks. 6 Photo: Frank Reid
