Sunderland teachers given care packages to help with return to schools
Teachers across Wearside have been busy making arrangements for social distancing and COVID testing as they prepared to reopen classrooms from today, Monday, March 8.
But Silksworth councillor Phil Tye has been helping out in a different way, providing care packages to education staff at New Silksworth Academy to help them relax ahead of face-to-face lessons restarting.

“You’re basically going back to the beginning with them and the staff are going to have an uphill battle.
“So this is just to say thank you for what they’ve all done so far and that we’re behind them all the way.”
The packs, which were handed out to staff, included chocolate, sweets, paracetamol and toiletries, as well as a letter of thanks.

Emma Robins, headteacher at the school, said: “Staff have appreciated the thoughtful gestures and words of support from our community.
“To each receive an appreciation box from our chair of governors at the end of the partial closure means so much to us.
“The words in the note were extra special and recognises the hard work we have all put in as a team – it is fabulous to be part of a team where we all pull together.”
