Number of Covid cases in Sunderland rises for third time since January - but rate remains second lowest in region

It’s only the third time cases have risen since mid-January but the rolling rate remains low – with just 11.9 per 100,000 people having tested positive for the virus in the city.
It’s the second lowest rate in LA7 with Durham recording a rolling rate of 11.1 per 100,000 people.

Hide AdEarlier this year, the rolling rate was 517.1 per 100,000 people as 1,436 Covid cases were confirmed in the week leading up to January 2, 2021.
The most recent figures, published by the UK Government, show 33 Covid cases were confirmed in the local authority in the seven days up to May 15.
An increase of 50% compared to the week leading up to May 7, where 22 cases were confirmed over the seven days.
All but three areas of Sunderland – Southwick, Lakeside and Farringdon, and Harraton, Rickleton and Fatfield – recorded between 0 and 2 cases in seven days.

Hide AdWhile Southwick, and Harraton, Rickleton and Fatfield both recorded three cases, Lakeside and Farringdon saw four confirmed cases.
It comes as North East health chiefs have warned that the region is ‘not out the woods yet'.
In a statement the LA7 chiefs, who represent , said: “Some areas of the country are beginning to see infection rates creep up again – some are increasing very quickly - and cases have been linked to new variants of concern which appear to be more easily passed on.

Hide Ad“Schools and businesses across our region have been affected by small, localised outbreaks and as we know from painful experience, this is likely to result in spread among the wider community.
“Our communities have sacrificed a great deal to drive down infection rates and this diligence has led to the roadmap progressing according to its original schedule.
"There is, however, no guarantee that restrictions will be lifted further on June 21 as we all hope they will be.”
